Common questions › Improving your visibility
Does our existing SEO work still help?
Some of it, quite a lot — and some of it not at all. Being retrievable and factually clear carries straight over. Ranking positions, keyword targeting and link volume for its own sake mostly do not.
The two disciplines overlap, but not where most people assume, and treating AI visibility as a subsection of your SEO retainer is how brands end up optimising for the wrong outcome.
What carries over
- Being crawlable and fast. Assistants and their crawlers have to be able to read you. Everything technical you already do here still counts.
- Clear, consistent product facts. Structured, unambiguous specifications help a system that is trying to state a fact about you without getting it wrong.
- Third-party coverage. The relationships that earn you mentions and reviews are the same relationships that put you into the sources assistants read. The work is the same; the reason it pays has changed.
What does not carry over
- Ranking position. There is no position three inside a sentence. A page ranking first for a term nobody phrases to an assistant contributes nothing here.
- Keyword targeting. People talk to assistants in whole sentences with context and constraints. The unit is a buying question, not a phrase.
- Link volume as a goal. What matters is being present and well described in the specific sources an assistant retrieves for your category, which is a much shorter and more findable list than a link profile.
The trap worth naming
A brand can be doing well in ordinary search and be close to invisible in assistant answers, and its existing reporting will show nothing wrong at all. Those two facts are compatible because they measure different moments: search reports on people who already decided to look for something, and assistant answers form the shortlist before that. If you only watch the first, the second can go badly for a long time before you notice.
