Common questions › Improving your visibility

Can we pay to appear in AI answers?

Not in the organic recommendation itself, for now. Advertising is arriving in and around these products, but it is separate from the answer that names three brands — and anybody offering to place you inside that answer is describing something else.

The short version: the shortlist an assistant gives a buyer is not, today, an inventory that can be bought in the way a search ad slot can. Vendors are introducing advertising in and around assistant products, and that will keep changing, but it sits beside the recommendation rather than inside it.

Why the distinction matters commercially

It means the organic shortlist is currently earned rather than bought, which is unusually good news for brands without the largest budget in their category. It also means the thing that earns it — being well and consistently described in the sources assistants read — is durable in a way paid placement is not.

What to be sceptical of

  • Anyone offering guaranteed placement in AI answers. There is no mechanism to guarantee it, so what is being sold is either advertising described misleadingly, or content work with a promise attached that cannot be kept.
  • Anyone offering to get you into a model's training data. Nobody outside the vendors controls that.
  • Networks of low-quality pages built to be quoted by assistants. Set aside whether it works this quarter; it is the same pattern search engines spent two decades penalising, and it puts your brand on the wrong side of that.

What we would suggest instead

Treat the sources that influence your category as a finite, findable list — because that is what a scan turns them into — and work on being accurately and favourably represented there. That is public relations, retailer hygiene and honest comparison content, aimed by evidence rather than sprayed.
